Jon Jones is the Greatest Ever!?

On Saturday night March 19, 2011 Jon "Bones" Jones  defeated Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in extremely impressive fashion. At 23 years of age he became the youngest UFC champion (I guess Vitor Belfort's victory at 19 no longer counts?). So now all the talk is about this being the beginning of the Jon Jones era, is he the greatest ever, can anyone beat him?
Jon Jones is a very, very, very talented MMA fighter with superb athletic ability. He seems to be a fast study picks up the game with ease.  He is tall with an inhumane reach, has excellent footwork and excellent wrestling skills. He does many things great. But he is not the first with all these qualities. I understand hype is part of the sport, it's part of what drives the money. Fans need someone to compel them watch the shows. We have yet to see Jon Jones tested, which is a testament to his skill, but how will he react to adversity? To his first time being tagged and stunned? To his first time in submission peril?
I believe it was Forrest Griffin who once said after praising Anderson Silva, that someday someone would beat him and everyone would say, "Oh, that's how it's done! It's so simple." and the puzzle solved. But until then, everyone would be in awe. And he was right, when Chael Sonnen almost beat Silva it seemed so simple. Take him down and ground him. When Machida was on his unbeaten streak, most believed no one could solve that puzzle. then Rua came along and gave us the blueprint. There is someone out there who will give Jones fits, and he may not even be that good, just a stylistic nightmare. Will it be Rashad Evans? I don't think so. But soon we will see both in the Octagon to answer that question.
The reason Fedor Emelianenko was seen for so long as the greatest of all time had some to do with his record and skill and the opponents he faced. But much more it was for the battles he went through in the ring and cage. The adversity he overcame to be victorious. I want to see Jones suplexed onto his head then submit his opponent in 30 seconds before I'll bestow greatest of all time on him.

Mirko "CroCop" set to retire?

What would Mirko "CroCop" give to be back in 2006? That was the last time he earned a meaningful victory. On a September night he defeated both Wanderlei Silva and Josh Barnett on the same night on his road to winning the Pride Open Weight Grand Prix. That was Mirko's crowning achievement and no one can take that away from him. That was five years ago and CroCop's body and skills have diminished. He used to say right kick hospital, left kick cemetery. Last night he fired off his trademark left high kick on Brendan Schaub and . . . nothing. In the end, after a close fight and looking better than he had in years, all it took was a powerful right from rising star Schaub to end CroCop's night.

To his fans, like me, the sight was disheartening and sad. CroCop of Pride would have ended the fight differently. The truth is his body and psyche can't handle top flight MMA anymore. He never really adjusted to fighting in the cage and probably has never really recovered from a multitude of injuries. He wants to fight, wants badly to succeed in the UFC. but unless you pit Mirko against unknowns, I'm not sure he can win, much less be his old self. He doesn't let go his hands or legs. Seems hesitant with every step. Just complacent in the cage. The man that made Bob Sapp cry in the ring, now just walks around the Octagon like taking a Sunday stroll.
To avoid further damage to his body and career, it's best to walk off into the sunset now. Start a training center, raise the next Croatian star. But don't place yourself in unnecessary danger Mirko, unless there is something you need to prove to yourself.

UFC 128 pits the top two light heavyweights in UFC battling for supremacy

UFC 128 Shogun vs. Jones in Newark, New Jersey will hopefully show fans where the evolution of MMA will lead. The main event pits champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua against the top prospect in the light heavyweight division, Jon “Bones” Jones. This will be Shogun's first title defense and Jones' first title fight. Odds makers have Jones as an 8 to 5 favorite over the champion and with good reason.

Few fighters have created as much buzz and fan awe as Jon Jones has. His record is 12 – 1 with his only loss coming via disqualification after after cutting and blooding Matt Hamill. With the exception of that loss he has finished his last four opponents inside the Octagon including the previously unbeaten Ryan Bader and tough veteran Vladimir Matyushenko. He introduced spinning back elbows and simply jumping over an adversary to take their back. He is athletic, exciting, unorthodox and a sponge for the sport of MMA. All fans can think of is how good and how far can Jon Jones go?

If you listen to all this hype you can't help but assume that Shogun Rua is only safekeeping Jones' championship belt. You would be terribly wrong. In his pride days, Shogun was much like Jon Jones is now. He did things in the ring that no one else had or could. He finished opponents, he knocked people out (Ricardo Arona), he made others quit (Rampage Jackson). It seemed the only thing keeping from holding Pride gold was that his mentor and good friend Wanderlei Silva held that belt. Then the injuries came and the surgeries then Pride folded into the UFC and a long layoff followed. He looked tired and not at all like his old self in his first few UFC bouts, especially in his loss to Forrest Griffin. But the Shogun of old returned beginning with his knockout of MMA legend Chuck Liddell. In his first UFC title fight against Lyoto Machida he lost a controversial decision but avenged that with a first round knock out in the rematch. Now he faces Jon Jones and a highly anticipated bout.

Anyone who assumes Shogun will be outclassed and over matched on the feet by Jones forgets Shogun knocked out Alistair Overeem. Shogun solved the Machida puzzle and made Rampage Jackson quit. Jones does possess a large physical advantage over Shogun on the feet but Shogun is not new to anything in MMA. He has the technical skill to neutralize or overcome this disadvantage. The other common assumption is that Jones will out-wrestle and out-grapple Shogun. While does not possess a direct wrestling background, his jiu-jitsu is above average and has used it to gain an advantage on the ground. He was not outwrestled by Kevin Randleman or Mark Coleman (in their second encounter). Shogun has not been overwhelmed by any opponent in his career and I don't expect Jon Jones to be the first. Shogun will be game for whatever the fight brings.

The bigger question for me is how Jon Jones will react to adversity. In all his UFC bouts, Jon Jones has dominated. He has not been in a second of trouble, which is what has made him such a fan favorite. But to me, the best measure of a a fighter is how he takes a punch, how he overcomes a tough opponent. That is what has made fighters like Randy Couture and Fedor Emelianenko favorites. They won, but they also when at times when the odds where stacked against the. We have not had the opportunity to see Jon Jones face those odds. I have a feeling he will be put in dire straits in this bout by Shogun and I also believe his vast physical attributes will carry past the troubles towards a victory against Shogun.

I expect the bout to be exciting and thrilling and set a new standard of excellence for MMA and the UFC. We will see the crowning of a new king of the light heavyweight division with hopes that he can defend that title better than the last few that have held it.

Here are my picks for the remaining fights :
Urijah Faber vs. Eddie Wineland – Faber via TKO round 3
Joseph Benavidez vs. Ian Loveland – Benavidez via Unanimous decision
CroCop vs. Brendan Schaub – Schaub via TKO round 2

UFC/ZUFFA purchase Strikeforce

The world of Mixed Martial Arts was caught by a spinning backfist when Dana White, the man at the forefront of the Ultimate Fighting Championship and its parent company Zuffa, announced early Saturday March 12, 2010 that Zuffa had purchased Strikeforce, the UFC's stiffest competition in North America.
Through a video interview with Ariel Helwari posted on MMAFighting.com, Dana White made the purchase official to the fans. He stated several factors for the purchase, mainly the expansion of the UFC's talent pool in order to succeed with international ventures the UFC has planned for its future. He also stated that the negotiation process was fairly quick and that it will be “business as usual” for the Strikeforce brand. All remaining contracts and obligations by Strikeforce will be honored and Larry Coker will remain as head of Strikeforce.
Reaction has been mixed to the merger. Some call it a UFC monopoly on the sport, others are excited for the possible mega match-ups that are now possible. Paul Daley, who is currently slated to fight Nick Diaz on April 9 for Diaz' welterweight belt under the Strikeforce banner, is threatening to pull out citing past personal issues with Dana White and the UFC. Paul Daley was banned from the UFC after punching Josh Koscheck after the final bell in his last UFC fight.

I think it will take some time before we see the true impact the buyout has on the sport of MMA. Strikeforce still has two years worth of contracts and TV deals. For the fans, I think the end result will be positive. The UFC will have most if not all the top talent in every weight class at its disposal to put together the match-ups fans yearn for. Fedor vs. Couture, Overeem vs. Velasquez and many others are now a possibility. Unfortunately, it will be the fighters themselves who will suffer. Now they will have limited availability to seek high paying employment and exposure. The UFC will also not be able to hire every fighter available so roster cuts will have to be made. Lastly, this also gives the UFC ultimate discretion on pay scales for fighters.

"The Conspirator" trailer promises tense political drama

"The Conspirator" trailer promises tense political drama

I watched the preview of "The Conspirator" this weekend and was very excited by the story, cast and director Robert Redford. I never knew conspirators were convicted for the Lincoln assassination or that there was actually a plot to murder the Vice-President and Secretary of State. Very, Very excited about this release.

"Rango" is a nice appetizer for Johnny Depp fans

Rango”, Johnny Depp's latest project, is a surprisingly well made animated film that can appeal to kids, teens and adults alike.
The story centers around a lonely chameleon with an overactive imagination who has been kept as a pet his entire life. After a rather timely accident he is left alone on the side of the road near the Mojave desert. From there, his adventure and search for who he is ensues and he takes us along for the ride. Voiced by Johnny Depp, Rango is the type of character that if done wrong can annoy you. I was pleasantly surprised to find Rango the character likable and funny. Johnny Depp does excellent work in putting a voice to the much maligned chameleon during his many adventures. Little nods are given to some of Depp's previous work with a short cameo by Hunter S. Thompson. As Rango enters the town of Dirt portraying the classic Man with No Name character, we also are treated to an animated version of the character made famous by Clint Eastwood. In classic Eastwood style, he gives Rango simple advice that makes all the difference.
As sheriff of Dirt, his number one job is to secure the water left in the town. Once he realizes that the town's loss of water has more to do with greed than nature, Rango sets out to save the water, town and his love, the brazen young lizard Beans.
Johnny Depp is joined by Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Ned Beatty and Alfred Molina among many others making “Rango” a very enjoyable film to take your entire family to and the first box office hit of the new year.
